Tips

Every month we will offer new tips (and some trivia) to make your quilting easier. Some are our own suggestions and others will come from YOU.
If we print your tip, we will send you a free Fat Quarter!

THIS MONTH'S TIPS:

The following tip is from Kathy Winslow of Mount Vernon, Ohio:

Use surgical drapes to protect tables or floor under quilt tops while spraying the tops with spray adhesive to layer them for quilting. It protects the underlying surface and they are reusable.

If you are new to quilting -- or just want to practice a new technique -- consider making very small quilt projects, perhaps 18" to 36" square, just for practice. Your cutting will improve, your stitching will improve, and your free-motion quilting will definitely get better. What to do with those little project? Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Units are often elated to receive such finished quilts, although you should check with your local hospital staff before donating your work. The hospital can decide whether to send the quilts home with the babies or keep them to brighten the brightly lit wards.

Orphan blocks can be made into small quilts just by adding a few borders. If you've wanted to try a border pattern or technique but don't want to make enough for a big quilt, experiment on a small project. (See above.)

When machine quilting, try using one color of thread for the top and a different color in the bobbin.
